Frequently asked questions
Do I need to have played football to become a referee?⌄
No. Most successful referees never played at a high level. A good understanding of the game and a willingness to learn the Laws is enough to start.
How old do I need to be?⌄
In most countries you can begin refereeing youth matches from around 14–16 years old. There is no upper age limit to start.
How much can I earn?⌄
Match fees vary by country and level, paid per game. Grassroots fees are modest but add up; national and professional levels pay significantly more.
How long does it take to qualify?⌄
Many beginners are officiating their first matches within a few weeks of starting a course — typically after 12–20 hours of training plus supervised games.
What if I make mistakes or face abuse?⌄
Mistakes are part of learning and you are supported by mentors and assessors. Federations now run respect programmes and welfare support, with growing protections against abuse.
Do I need expensive equipment?⌄
To start you only need basic kit (whistle, cards, watch). Many local associations help with starter equipment.
